(Bangor, PA) - To mark the holiday season, Merchants Bank is donating a total of $6,000 to 12 area food banks, in order to meet the demand to feed the needy of Northampton County.
Second Harvest Food Bank’s website references the Food Research and Action Center’s research study, Food Hardship: A Closer Look at Hunger, which found that 15.4% of respondents from Northampton County experienced food hardship. As Second Harvest states on their website, “Food hardship is defined as the lack of sufficient funds within the past twelve months to buy food for themselves and their families.”
As a community bank fulfilling its mission, the Board of Directors and employees of Merchants take pride in their ongoing commitment to support the communities they serve. “We are happy to help meet some of the most basic needs of the less fortunate in our area,” said Tracey Smith, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Merchants Bank.
Financial donations of $500 each will be made to: The Salvation Army, Families First, Saint Elizabeth’s/Saint Joseph’s Ministry, Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, Pentecostal Christian Church, Benders Mennonite Church, Safe Harbor, Family Life Community Church, Portland Upper Mt. Bethel Pantry (PUMP), Nazareth Area Food Bank, New Bethany Ministries and Cornerstone Church. The 12 food banks provide food for Northampton County’s needy families.
